Navigating

Overland Outings

All overland outings at the The Pilgrimage are self-navigated.  We provide town highway maps (see below) that you download to your phone or tablet and your device’s nav system (“blue dot”) overlays over the map with no cell coverage needed to navigate.  On the maps, we’ve highlighted the unmaintained Class 4 road and Legal Trail road sections as follows:

  • Green:  easier, light terrain
  • Blue:  moderate/medium terrain
  • Red:  challenging/difficult terrain
  • Pinkish purple:  very challenging

Simply open the maps and pick and choose where you want to go.  Be creative and devise your own route stringing together Class 4 road sections according to your own preferences.

PLEASE NOTE:  WE ARE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL PUBLIC WIFI AT THE EVENT, BUT THRE IS ESSENTIALLY NO CELL PHONE COVERAGE, SO PLEASE DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO DOWNLOAD THE MAP FILES TO YOUR DEVICE BEFORE YOU COME TO THE RALLY!

For devices, any iphone, cellular ipad (wifi ipads need a special receiver), Android or Nexus 7 tablet should work.

MAP FILES WILL BE PROVIDED TO REGISTERED ENTRANTS BY EMAIL WELL BEFORE THE EVENT

GROUPS OF NO MORE THAN 6:  Okay, guys and gals, please listen up on this as it’s really the MOST IMPORTANT RULE OF THE PILGRIMAGE. PLEASE KEEP YOUR GROUPS TO NO MORE THAN SIX VEHICLES!   IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF FRIENDS HEADING OUT, STAGGER YOUR GROUPS BY A GOOD DISTANCE AND STAY STAGGERED.   Those opposed to overlanding will use the “ALL THESE TRUCKS CAME BY” complaint to spread alarm in their communities and that alarm has very real ramifications.  Spread yourselves out far and wide in small groups and drive slowly and we’ll have a fighting chance at keeping the alarm bells from ringing!

Formulating outings:  When you’re planning your outings, try to head out on the maintained roads to the far end of your intended route, then work your way back to the venue on the Class 4 road sections (if possible). This will help avoid traffic jams on the roads closest to the venue.
